The wine community in mourning: Romano Pietro Alagna leaves us
Marsala, 26 August 2024 – Pietro Alagna, Honorary President of Cantine Pellegrino di Marsala, passed away today at the age of 96. A leading figure in Italian oenology, a patron and great lover of the millenary culture that has shaped the western part of the island over the centuries, Pietro Alagna made a fundamental contribution to linking Marsala’s oenological history with today’s wine-growing modernity, linked to the promotion of native Sicilian varieties.
Pellegrino, a historic winery, announces the passing of Romano Pietro Alagna, Honorary President. A leading figure in Italian oenology, Pietro Alagna dedicated his life to the promotion and development of Sicilian oenology, leaving an indelible legacy in the wine world and in the hearts of all those who had the privilege of knowing him.
A mild-mannered, sober man of great culture and nobility of spirit, he led the company always putting man before profit, honesty and fairness before any ambition. Many passions, such as love for art in general, music, history, as well as a deep faith, have always accompanied him throughout his life, making him a great example of philanthropy and patronage, always pragmatic, silent, never ostentatious.
Born on 21 April 1928 in Marsala, Pietro Alagna began his journey into the world of wine at a young age, developing a passion that led him to become one of the industry’s most revolutionary men. His career was marked by awards, thanks to his ability to combine tradition and innovation. Alagna was a pioneer in the wine industry, helping to launch and enhance the largest wine-growing area in the Mediterranean, in the west of Sicily. His vision has transformed the perception of Sicilian wine in Italy and around the world, bringing lesser-known terroirs to the fore and promoting sustainable and responsible farming practices.
In addition to his professional career, Pietro Alagna was a mentor and friend to many. His generosity and passion for wine made him a beloved and respected person not only in the wine industry, but also among lovers of history, art and culture. Among others, the Whitaker heirs, who entrusted him with the Ingham-Withaker archive, a patrimony of considerable historical interest, now housed at Cantine Pellegrino in Marsala. He was also a generous patron, contributing to the recovery of the Punic Ship discovered by the great archaeologist Honor Frost, for which he received an honour from Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom. Just as remarkable was his social commitment. Furthermore, his love for Pantelleria led him to protect the island and create favourable conditions for its economic development. He actively participated in conferences and seminars, sharing his knowledge and inspiring new generations in the sector.

The funeral will take place on 27 August at 5.30 pm at Marsala’s Mother Church, where friends, colleagues and his admirers are invited to pay their respects to him.
In his memory, the family and the wine community invite everyone to raise a glass in honour of a man who left a lasting imprint in the heart of our wine culture.
